WHAT TO BRING
Clothing: comfortable, lightweight, and functional clothes are important for Alaskan wilderness travelers, who can be exposed to all types of weather conditions. A layered approach to clothing works best in Alaska, with summer temperatures that can range from the 30's to 50's at night and the 60's to 80's during the long summer days. By using the list below it will allow you to pack light and be comfortable. Equipment can be purchased in Anchorage at REI or in Homer at Eagle Enterprises. REI also has rental equipment available. Jackets: Fleece is great, it is light, warm, dries quickly if wet and can be worn under your rain jacket. Recommended weight, Polartec 200 or equivalent. Pants: Some clients like to wear jeans or sweatpants around camp. However you must bring at least one pair of pants made of lightweight quick drying synthetic fabric, our personal favorite is the Paramount Convertible Pant made by The North Face. It has plenty of pockets, wind resistant fabric, dries quickly if wet and the lower pant legs zip off turning them into shorts for those warmer days in Alaska. Shirts: One long sleeve shirt with a collar and good pockets. One long sleeve t-shirt or a lightweight fleece top Long underwear: one pair of medium or expedition weight synthetic underwear. If you get cold easily get the expedition weight. Raingear: Both a rain jacket and pants are essential on any trip to Alaska. Don't buy the most expensive and don't buy the cheapest either. Lightweight, breathable raingear is available at stores throughout Alaska. In Anchorage at REI or the Helly Hansen store, in Homer at Eagle Enterprises. Waterproof footwear: You will need hip boots; the non-insulated type is fine for our trips. They can be purchased rather inexpensively at larger discount stores throughout Alaska. Also you will want to bring a lightweight waterproof boot or shoe to wear around camp. Sleeping Bag: A synthetic (preferred) or down filled sleeping bag, rated down to +20 F. Other Items to bring:
